Caterham: Pretty happy so far

It's so far so good for Caterham with sporting director Steve Nielsen saying they are "pretty" pleased with how their car has performed in pre-season testing.

Caterham is one of nine to have put their 2012 car through its pace at Jerez over the last four days and, unlike some of their rivals, have managed to do so without any major issues.

Although a damaged starter shaft cut short Heikki Kovalainen's running on Tuesday, the Finn amassed 139 laps on his second day while Giedo van der Garde added a further 74 to the team's tally on Day Three.

"It's been a good week. So far we are pretty happy," Nielsen told Sky Sports News.

"It's very much about system checks and getting mileage on all the parts and really just trying to break the car in race trim. That way we can see what goes wrong before we go racing.

"It's been about the job list and so far we've been ticking things off each day. There's still a long way to go. But we are happy with our programme, so far so good."

Nielsen also conceded that Caterham's car, like its rivals, is evolving all the time and therefore what we see today out on track will not be the same car that is used at the next test at Barcelona later this month.

"You learn stuff as you go along. So we already know some bits we want to change on the car. Some cooling bits, and other new bits we want to add.

"It sounds crazy but no car is ever built the same way twice. The car in Barcelona will be different in many ways from the car we have here."

To date the team's best lap time at Jerez has been Kovalainen's 1:21.518 set on Wednesday, however, Nielsen admits that it is still too early to tell where the team is in relation to the rest of the field.

"It's hard to know here, with cars having different fuel loads and teams are trying out different wings and setups. After the two tests in Barcelona we will have a much better idea as to where we stand."
