Williams hire Wurz as driver mentor

Bruno Senna and Pastor Maldonado will be able to draw on the experience of Alex Wurz this season after Williams hired him as a driver mentor.

Wurz, who competed in 69 grands prix and scored 45 points with three podiums, will travel to races to assist Senna and Maldonado as well as test driver Valtteri Bottas.

The 38-year-old started his Formula One career with Benetton in 1997 before moving to McLaren in 2001 where he acted as a test and reserve driver until 2005. He joined Williams the following year, starting off as a test driver before stepping into race seat in 2007.

"This is a great initiative by Williams and highlights just how hard the team is pushing to optimise its performance," the Austrian said.

"Throughout my career as a sportsman, which started at the age of 12 in BMX racing, includes over a decade in F1 and is still ongoing, I am lucky to have gained so much experience.

"I grew up in a family business of driver training and naturally I enjoy helping fellow athletes to operate at their best.

"I'm really looking forward to using my expertise to help Williams at this important stage in its history."

Williams engineering chief Mark Gillan welcomed Wurz, who has accompanied the team to Barcelona for the second test, on board.

"I am delighted to be working once more with Alex and look forward to his valuable input with the drivers as the whole team strives to continuously improve in all aspects of its operation," he said.
