Sebastian Vettel was surprised by his margin over Lewis Hamilton in qualifying, although admits being the last in line at Monza did help.
Arriving at Monza earlier in the week, Red Bull expressed a few concerns about their chances as in the past the high-speed circuit has not suited the characteristics of their cars.
However, Vettel put to rest any suggestion that may still be the case.
The reigning World Champ, despite looking a bit ragged and putting his RB7 into a massive slide, posted a 1:22.275 to qualify almost half a second up on his nearest rival, Hamilton.
"We thought it would be much closer than that," said the 24-year-old.
"We knew we had more time in the car and I had some cars in front which always helps in Monza, but we did not think we would be on pole by such a big margin at a track that for the last two years did not suit us.
"We have quite a racy approach, so I'm happy."
And he wasn't the only Red Bull team member who did not expect such a dominant display.
Team boss Christian Horner told BBC One: "Sebastian was really hooked up out there today. It's a massive margin, and was completely unexpected."
