Sorry Liuzzi hit with grid penalty

Tonio Liuzzi may have apologised for taking out several drivers in Sunday's Italian GP but that didn't stop the stewards from penalising him.

As the lights went out at Monza, Liuzzi tried to make up positions, passing a few of his fellow backmarkers. However, it all proved to be one move too many as the next resulted in the door being shut on him.

That forced the HRT driver onto the grass and from there he lost control of the car, sliding along the grass before returning to the track in the middle of the first corner - and in the middle of the pack.

Carnage ensued with Nico Rosberg, Vitaly Petrov and Liuzzi all retiring while Kamui Kobayashi, Sebastien Buemi and Rubens Barrichello all suffered damage.

"I was really looking forward to my home race and, although I knew it was going to be tough, it all ended prematurely," Liuzzi said.

"I had a good start getting past both Virgins, Lotuses and Daniel but then I went for another overtaking manoeuvre and got closed out.

"That put me into the grass and once I was there I tried to slow down but completely lost control of the car and unfortunately hit other cars.

"I am really sorry for Petrov, Rosberg and the other drivers who were forced to retire because of this. Now it's over but we are fighters and we have to look ahead to the next race."

But for that race, the Singapore GP, the Italian will have to contend with the five grid-slot penalty after he was penalised for his Italian shunt by the Monza stewards.
