Fernando Alonso says the late stoppage in the Monaco GP, which allowed Sebastian Vettel to change his tyres, robbed him of a shot at winning.
With seven laps to go in Monte Carlo, Alonso was all over the back of the German's Red Bull racer as dogged Vettel for the victory.
And given that Alonso's tyres were 25 laps younger than Vettel's, it was only a matter of time before the Spaniard made an attempt at taking the P1 slot.
However, the race was then red flagged as Vitaly Petrov crashed heavily. This allowed all the drivers to have work done on their cars if needed, including changing tyres.
"I think we gained one position with the first Safety Car and maybe we lose (the) victory in the last red flag," said Alonso.
"I really think in the last eight or nine laps, the tyres on the Red Bull were struggling a lot - certainly in the last part of the circuit.
"There was nothing to lose for me. I am not leading the Championship. I will try and win the race and if we crash, we crash."
Alonso, though, insists he's not unhappy with his second-placed finish, his best result in what is proving to be a trying season for Ferrari.
"Third in Turkey and now second here, so it was a good weekend for us. We were quick on Thursday and quick in qualifying, so it was okay for us.
"I am extremely happy because the team needs this result and the podium after some weeks with difficulties.
"Seven days ago in Barcelona we were 1m30s behind the leader, so this is a much more normal weekend for us and a good motivation for the guys."
