Alonso: P1 wasn't our position

Despite leading the Spanish GP at the end of the first lap, Fernando Alonso concedes that first place was not his true position.

The Spaniard made a flying start from fourth place on the grid to take the lead away from the two squabbling Red Bull drivers.

But, after the second round of pit stops, he dropped down the order to third place where he was dogged by pole-sitter Mark Webber.

Behind their battle was the charging Jenson Button, who easily overtook them both, moving up into third place.

And when Alonso pitted came in for his fourth stop several laps ahead of Webber, it was game over for the Ferrari driver who lost more and more time to the Aussie as each lap went by.

In the end, he finished in fifth place, a lap down on race winner Sebastian Vettel.

"The start was good. I think we were missing some good starts this year, but it finally came right today," Alonso told the BBC.

"Here you have the opportunity to take the slipstream as well.

"We were not quick during the weekend then after lap one we were first. But it wasn't our position.

"It looks a little bit sad when you lose positions but we must understand that P1 is not our position at the moment.

"We were not competitive at raw pace, we were too slow with hard tyre.

"There are clearly two teams ahead of everybody and at the moment we need to change the situation."
